The sprawling 700 square yard bungalow of the legendary Telugu actor and former chief minister N T Rama Rao (NTR) on road number 13 in the Banjara Hills area here will make way for a commercial complex.
The house was a gift by NTR to his youngest daughter Uma Maheshwari who stays abroad. He made it his residence after losing power to the Congress in 1989 until he breathed his last after losing the intra-party tussle to his son-in-law and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu.
The demolition of the imposing building is almost complete despite protests from NTR’s widow Lakshmi Parvathi. According to Parvathi, NTR’s children are planning to sell the premises where a commercial complex will be erected. NTR’s widow was in tears over the systematic destruction of the memories of her late husband by his family members and wished they had preserved it in memory of their father.
“I first met NTR in this house when I was writing his biography. That was the time when he was forsaken by his family, but I stepped in,” Parvathi recalled. After NTR’s death, Lakshmi Parvathi continued to stay in the Banjara Hills residence for over 15 years.
