The Trinamool Congress (TMC) lashed out at the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday over the suspension of Rajya Sabha members from the Upper House, alleging that it had turned Parliament into a "deep, dark chamber".
"Democracy has been suspended in India. Parliament has been turned into a deep, dark chamber," TMC leader Derek O'Brien told reporters.
Lok Sabha MPs on Tuesday flagged that over 11.4 lakh cases are pending in family courts across the country and called for their speedy settlement.
The issue came up during a debate in theLokSabhaon the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which was moved for consideration by Law Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Participating in the discussion, Kaushalendra Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) said the number of pending cases in family courts is increasing and stands at over 11.4 lakh. He called for a speedy settlement of the cases.
Bhartruhari Mahtab of the Biju Janata Dal also echoed his views and said the government should say what is it doing to settle the pending cases in the family courts.
The government on Tuesday said the Border Security Force (BSF) has achieved success in curbing smuggling of drugs and other contraband items following the extension of territorial jurisdiction along India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said inLokSabhathat BSF's extension of territorial jurisdiction in Punjab and some other states was aimed at empowering the border guarding force to discharge its duties more effectively.
Rai said the move has been helpful in the wake of use of technologies such as drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles - generally having long range - by anti-national forces for surveillance as well as for smuggling of arms, narcotics and fake Indian currency notes.

Rajya Sabha on Tuesday paid tributes to Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in the Kargil war, with Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu saying their valour will continue to inspire generations.
