Several non-NDA members in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday opposed the bill to raise FDI in the insurance sector to 100 per cent and demanded that the proposed legislation be sent to a Parliamentary panel for further scrutiny.

Participating in the debate on The Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Bill, 2025, moved for consideration and passage by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Upper House, members also objected to the title of the Bill, which is in both English and Hindi.

The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Several parties of the opposition INDIA bloc will stage a protest against the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, which seeks to replace MGNREGA, in the Parliament complex on Thursday morning.

Sources said the protest will be organised near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex at 10.15 am and MPs of various opposition parties will raise slogans to oppose the government's move.

Opposition MPs on Thursday questioned the government for allowing private operators into the nuclear power sector, saying it could impact the sovereignty of the country, as the Rajya Sabha discussed the SHANTI Bill 2025.

Participating in the debate, Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose said the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill is not just flawed but "fundamentally dangerous".

"On the contrary, it is a reckless, dangerous and deeply flawed attempt to privatise one of the most sensitive and high-risk sectors of a nation, the nuclear energy sector," he said.

He said one of the most critical essential sovereign functions of an elected government is given to the private sector.

Parliament on Thursday passed the nuclear energy bill, with the Rajya Sabha giving its nod to the legislation that seeks to open the tightly-controlled civil nuclear sector for private participation.

The Upper House passed the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill by a voice vote. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Minister of State, Department of Atomic Energy, Jitendra Singh said nuclear is a reliable 24x7 power supply source, which is not so in the case of other renewable energy options.
