A plea has been moved in the Supreme Court seeking contempt action against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP MP Sanjay Singh for making “scandalising” remarks against the top court following its February 14 judgement that restricted the power of the National Capital Territory government.
“Both of them are legally obligated to uphold constitutional integrity and respect to the constitutional institutions being created by the Constitution itself. However, both had made vituperative and scandalous statements alleging the highest court as biased and passing political judgement and favouring the central government,” a petition filed by Dr Harinath Ram stated.
The petitioner cited the statement of Kejriwal and the tweet by Singh, claiming those were “directed at scandalising, disrupting and tarnishing the impeccable reputation of this court”.
The petitioner sought a direction to initiate appropriate legal action, including contempt proceedings, against Kejriwal and Singh for their remarks. He also stated the court should issue guidelines in respect of the scope and ambit of judicial criticism on the part of the elected public representative, saying any remark made by them directly or indirectly impact the faith of common citizen in highest justice delivery system.
