New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a meeting of a high-level committee to choose the next CBI Director but the deliberations remained inconclusive, sources said.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna attended the meeting, which comes ahead of the end of the two-year term of incumbent CBI chief Praveen Sood on May 25.
A 1986-batch IPS officer of Karnataka cadre, Sood was Director General of Police in Karnataka when he was appointed CBI Director.
There was no official word on what transpired in the meeting but sources said the committee could not arrive at a consensus on the shortlisted names. There are indications that Sood may get a one-year extension as the law provides for the continuation of a CBI chief for this period.
The CBI Director is chosen by the union government on the recommendation of a three-member appointment committee, headed by the Prime Minister and comprises the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India.
