Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed at Ahmedabad airport on Friday morning to launch the celebration of 75 years of independence by flagging off a symbolic "Dandi March" from Mahatma Gandhi-founded Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The event named "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" is part of a series of events being organised by the government to commemorate the 75th anniversary of independence.

The Prime Minister during his 3-4 hour visit will be addressing a gathering near Abhay Ghat, the resting place of late Prime Minister Moraji Desai. The event is being attended by scores of government officers, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Governor Acharya Devvrat, other ministers, BJP leaders, faculties and students of Gandhi-founded Gujarat Vidyapith, among others.

The PM is also flagging off the symbolic "Dandi March", which is marking its 91st anniversary of the historic march led by Mahatma Gandhi against the salt law under the British Raj. The PM and the marchers are likely to visit Hriday Kunj, the erstwhile residence of Gandhi and his wife Kasturba, at the Sabarmati Ashram.

Sources said that the PM may announce the redevelopment of Sabarmati Ashram in his speech. The redevelopment envisages bringing all the six trusts, started by Gandhi, together as part of the larger ashram.
