Kolkata Police on Friday intercepted and detained a person, who was found waiting near Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s house in South Kolkata. He was reportedly trying to enter her residence.

The identity of the said person is being verified, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal told reporters. The person was found with different i-cards in his possession.

Police officials are trying to find out the reason behind his move.

A dagger, a firearm, and some ganja have been found from his possession.

The man is also suspected to have forged his identity.

“Considering the threat to her security, (as) she is a z-plus category protectee, it is a very serious issue,” Goyal said. The STF, special branch, and the police station concerned, are examining him. “Our people have done a great job,” Goyal added.

West Bengal was recently rocked by a spate of violence ahead of and during the panchayat polls. While Mamata has alleged that the lives of her party workers were lost in the violence, opposition parties like the BJP have claimed otherwise.

Today even as TMC workers have thronged Kolkata for the party's Martyr's Day celebration, BJP members across the state have staged protests to counter it.
