In independent India, the first to exercise their franchise were those from Chini and Pangi Assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh.

Since these areas experience heavy snowfall in early November, the Election Commission decided to conduct the polls here first in 1951.

The polling for the elections took place on October 25, 27, 29, 31 and November 2, 1951. The last day of polling was February 21, 1952.
