In 1951, when the Election Commission sat down to decide on symbols before the 1951 elections, one thing was clear: the symbols should be familiar and illiterate voters should
be able to easily recognise them.

It didn’t want any object that had any religious or sentimental association as party symbols. So cow, temple, national flag and spinning wheel were out of the list.
