Proxy voting In 1957, a man in Rajasthan wanted the presiding officer to permit his wife, who was not a voter, to vote in place of his mother, who had not come to the polling booth.

He explained that it was his wife who managed his household affairs and not his mother.

In Uttar Pradesh, a woman told a presiding officer that eight other women of her village had requested her to cast votes on their behalf and that her vote should, therefore, be taken to “represent” the votes of the eight other women too.
