The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered for lodging of an FIR against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Goa for violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Kejriwal had remarked that voters may take money from any party but should vote for his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
“Necessary legal action be initiated by filing an FIR/complaint against Arvind Kejriwal for his statements. Compliance report in this regard should be sent to the commission latest by 3 pm on January 31, 2017,” the poll panel directed the Chief Electoral Officer of Goa on Sunday.
In its letter, the ECI noted that Kejriwal, being the chief minister of Delhi and a star campaigner of the AAP in Goa, was expected to conduct “in an exemplary manner in election campaigns so as to be a role model for others to emulate”.
“But he has on several occasions violated the provisions of the MCC by breaking his assurance to ECI given during the Legislative Assembly election of Delhi-2015. Kejriwal has thus violated the provisions of 123 (1) of Representation of People (RP) Act, 1951, read with Sections 171B (description of the offence of bribery), 171E (punishment of bribery) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860,” the ECI said.
