Irked by a guardian's decision to withdraw his child from school, the principal wrote "jhagralu" (cantankerous) in the character column of the student's transfer certificate so that she might not be able to get admission elsewhere.

The incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district, about 125 km from here.

According to reports, Shikha Kumar, a resident of Sikandarpur village in the district had recently passed Class VIII and was promoted to the next class.

Shikha's grandfather Babu Ram approached the principal of the City Public School at Beniganj in the district for a TC as he was unable to pay the hefty tuition fee.

"I am a poor man. My son died recently. I am unable to pay the fee charged by the school so I wanted to get her admitted to some other school," Babu Ram said.

The principal of the school initially tried to persuade him to allow the child to continue to study at his school but Babu Ram remained unmoved.

Irked over the withdrawal, the principal wrote on the TC that the girl was quarrelsome and non-cooperative.

Babu Ram, who is illiterate, came to know about it when he took his granddaughter to another school for admission.

"She was denied admission there because of the remark on the TC," he said.

Babu Ram approached senior district officials, who have ordered an inquiry into the matter.
