Congress legislators created ruckus in the House demanding the resignation of the Speaker, Nirmal Singh Kahlon, after a newspaper report claimed that he had been indicted by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the cash-for-job scandal in his earlier avatar as a minister in the Akali-BJP regime during 1997-2002.
‘No moral right’
The leader of the Opposition, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said Kahlon had no moral right to sit in the Speaker’s chair after his indictment.
Raising slogans and seeking Nirmal Singh Kahlon’s resignation, the Congress members trooped out of the House in protest. No business could be transacted in the House after repeated adjournments.
On Tuesday, the Akali Dal and Congress legislators had heckled and rained blows on each other over the issue of debate over recent violence in Ludhiana.
The Akali-BJP government has been reportedly sitting on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s request for prosecution of Kahlon for over three months now.
Indicted
The central investigating agency had reportedly indicted Nirmal Singh Kahlon and 15 other officials for taking bribes for granting jobs in the appointment of 909 panchayat secretaries in the Rural Development and Panchayat Department in 1999.
Kahlon was the minister of the department then.
Kahlon sought to brush aside the allegations against him as “politically motivated”.
