Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday claimedRahulGandhirightly called the "absconders" associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi "thieves" but the BJP is projecting his remarks as anti-OBC.

He claimed not a single person from Other Backward Classes (OBC) turned "absconder" after taking the country's money.

"Absconders are those people who are associated with the BJP and (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi.RahulGandhihas rightly called them thieves. What crime has he committed by raising the issue of Rs 20,000 crore in Adani's (industrialist Gautam Adani) companies," Singh asked while talking to reporters.

Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday termed Congress leaderRahulGandhi's disqualification from the Lok Sabha a "wrong thing" and does not bode well for democracy.

Gandhiwas on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "why all thieves have Modi surname" remark. He was later disqualified from the Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the case.

"I am against this, whether he isRahulGandhior Lalu Prasad Yadav or any other MP or MLA. It is against natural justice that on one side a judge delivered a judgement and on the other the MP or MLA is disqualified," Azad told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Kathua district. The Punjab and Haryana units of Congress held a day-long 'Sankalp Satyagraha' here on Sunday to protest againstRahulGandhi's disqualification from Lok Sabha, with party leaders hitting out at the BJP-led Centre alleging that it was behaving in a dictatorial manner.

Both units organised separate events at the state headquarters as part of the protest that saw the participation of many senior leaders.

National parties should support regional ones in their fight against BJP: Akhilesh

In a remark apparently meant for the Congress, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said the national parties should support regional parties fighting the Bharatiya Janata Party in their states.

While answering a question on Congress leaderRahulGandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha, the former UP chief minister said he wanted to congratulate the party for observing satyagraha.

When asked if his party would support the Congress’ movement, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) said the question is not whether the Samajwadi Party is sympathetic towardsRahulGandhi, but whether the country's democracy and constitution will survive or not.

"We cannot sympathise with any party," he said, adding that the national parties should cooperate and help the parties that are fighting against the BJP at the state level. (PTI)

Countering the BJP's OBC pitch after conviction and disqualification of Congress leaderRahulGandhi, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday stressed that he comes from the same community and is a three-time Chief Minister.

He said among the Chief Ministers of the Congress, both he and his Chhattisgarh counterpart Bhupesh Baghel are both OBCs.

"I belong to Mali Saini community... and there is just one MLA in the Assembly (from the community) that is me himself is but I am a third-time Chief minister in the state," he said at the Congress 'Sankalp Satyagraha' at the Rajghat.

Attacking the BJP, he said that it should tell people that Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, and Mehul Choksi are from OBC community.
