In an apparent bid to capture power in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has decided to make farm loan waiver a major poll plank. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who has been holding ‘khat sabhas’ (cot meetings) with the farmers in the state, said on Wednesday that his party will launch an agitation to force the Centre to waive loans of the farmers.

“We may not be in power at the Centre or in the state, but we will launch an agitation to force the government to concede to our demand of waiving farmers’ loans,” Rahul said, while addressing farmers in Kushinagar and Gorakhpur districts.

Rahul, in his meetings in the eastern Uttar Pradesh districts, has been harping on the issue and attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘taking care of the interests of big industrialists only’. “Modiji has waived loans worth Rs 1,10,000 crore... don’t run suit-boot government... waive loans of farmers also,” Rahul said in Gorakhpur.
