In the midst of election campaign for Rajasthan, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising a long-standing demand of the people of Kota for a new airport in the city.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Gandhi has urged Modi to bring 'Vikas (development) to enterprising people of Kota,” highlighting the “inconvenience” that they face due to the lack of the capacity of the existing airport in the city to handle the operation of large commercial aircrafts.

With over 1.5 lakh students, from across the country enrolling in coaching centres each year in Kota, it is “important” to have “a proper air” connectivity.

“Kota will benefit immensely from improved linkages to the major metropolitan cities of India, considering it's strategic location in the tourist map alongside its industrial base and its local craft. Lakhs of students and their families are inconvenienced by the absence of an airport. Let us strive to bring Vikas to enterprising people of Kota,” Gandhi said in his letter to Modi.

Addressing a public meeting last month in Kota, Gandhi had promised for fulfilling demands of the people for a new airport in the city if his party wins in the Assembly polls in the state.

Rajasthan is scheduled to go to Assembly polls on December 7 and results will be announced by December 11.
