Rain claims four more lives in Andhra Pradesh

The unseasonal rain coupled with hailstorm claimed four more lives in Anantapur and Kadapa districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Rain played havoc in Rayalaseema and Telangana on Monday, disrupting normal life in many towns and left hundreds of villages under darkness as gail winds uprooted electric poles.

Giving an account of the damage in Andhra Pradesh, state Agricultural Minister Prattipati Pullarao said that horticultural crops in 1,594 hectares such as banana, muskmelon, mango, watermelon, papaya, betel vine and sapota were damaged.

He said power supply was hit in 100 villages in Guthi, Dharmavaram, Kanaganapalli, Tadipatri, Puttapatri, Kadiri, Gorantla and Nallamaddi in Anantapur district.

In Kadapa, a record 74 mm of rain was recorded in Peddamandyam and record rainfall was reported from Proddutur, Muddanuru, Mylavaram, Chepadu and Mydukuru.

3 cm rain in Hyderabad

In Telangana, Nizamabad, Medak, Mahbubnagar and Adilabad saw incessant rain for the third consecutive day. Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts also received 2 to 3 cm of rain on Monday.  An official release said crops, including paddy, maize, corn, and millets in 15,366 hectares were damaged. Over 55 houses were damaged in Karimnagar district.

The Telangana government has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the kin of three persons who died due to heavy rain since Saturday.
