Three days of heavy rain that battered Mumbai may have inundated low-lying areas and affected local train services, but showers nonetheless bring huge relief to the city expecting severe water shortage in the coming months due to less than average rainfall this year.
The weather bureau has predicted heavy rain in the next 48 hours, even as local train services on Central and Western Railway lines were severely affected.
Earlier this month, civic authorities in the metro warned about cuts to water supply in the coming months as scanty showers so far had failed to fill the catchment areas.
However, non-stop rain in the last three days has managed to bring water level in all potable lakes to average mark, while also inundating the low-lying areas.
Giving details of rainfall in the state’s hinterland, the weather bureau said heavy rainfall is expected in south Konkan, Goa, and Vidarbha districts in the next 24 hours.
Until Sunday, the metropolis, known for its heavy rain and wet monsoon, had recorded lowest rainfall in August this year.
