Temperatures took a dip in North India on Sunday as most parts of the region were lashed by rains while higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand witnessed a fresh bout of snowfall.
Delhiites woke up to a cloudy weather while some parts experienced slight rains.
In Himachal Pradesh, the biting cold wave conditions continued without any let-up in most parts of the state as minimum temperatures further dropped by one to two degrees even as stormy conditions abated. Capital Shimla shivered at minus 0.2 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperatures dropped to -4 and -2.5 deg C at Kalpa and Keylog in the tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti which received 40 cm and 15 cm of snow.
Meanwhile, heavy snowfall, accompanied with strong winds persisted in upper parts of the Uttarakhand, confining people to indoors.Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri among other areas received snowfall on Sunday morning, plummeting temperatures in the region.
Further north, the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley reeled under severe cold conditions with the weather office sounding an avalanche warning in snow-bound areas of north Kashmir. Rain lashed several parts of the Valley with the famous ski resort of Gulmarg reeling under severe cold conditions at a low of minus 11.2 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Gulmarg plummeted over four notches from the previous night’s -7.0 degrees Celsius to -11.2 degrees Celsius, an official of the MET Department said. He said Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of -0.5 degrees Celsius, as against -1.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Punjab rainfall
In the plains, moderate to heavy rainfall lashed Punjab and Haryana for the second consecutive day even as minimum temperature hovered above normal in the region.
Chandigarh, the capital of both the states, received 7 mm of rain on Saturday night with the minimum temperature settling at 11.4 degrees C, two notches above normal. Light to moderate rainfall occurred in parts of Uttar Pradesh with the Ballia district recording the lowest temperature at 5.5 degree Celsius.
