A woman died by suicide by jumping into a water tank in Bikaner, Rajasthan on Tuesday night in a purported case of harassment related to dowry.
The woman shared a status on WhatsApp before taking her life which has left her family and friends shocked.
The message said she was ending her life as she was "fed up of the harassment from my father-in-law and sister-in-law. Miss you mummy-papa. My mother-in-law is fond of handcuffs. Please let her be handcuffed after my death.”
The woman identified as Durga Kanwar got married four years ago to Dilip Singh. Her death is being treated as a case of dowry death as per News18.
Om Prakash SHO of Hadan police station, said that an FIR has been registered and investigation is ongoing as per an Indian Express report.
He also added, “The post-mortem report is awaited. We will take further actions later. The funeral was held on Wednesday and we are waiting for the woman’s parents to give their statements. This is a case of dowry harassment,” said Om Prakash.
According to Durga’s parents, their daughter was being constantly harassed for dowry and was facing mental and physical abuse by her father-in-law, Chhailu Singh, mother-in-law, Kama Kanwar, and sister-in-law Sonu Kanwar.
As per the report, Durga's brother Sangu Singh said, “We had promised to give more jewellery after marriage, but her in-laws kept demanding for more.”
Her brother added, “In September 2024 we brought her back home after she was beaten up by her father-in-law. After two months we sent her back. They again started torturing her. On Tuesday when we saw her WhatsApp status, we immediately called up her in-laws, who told us that she has died. The family treated our daughter with disrespect.”
Investigations are underway, arrests would be made after that, the police said.
