On Saturday evening, a wedding ceremony in Karauli district in Rajasthan took an unexpected turn when the groom refused to complete the seventh and final round of the traditional marriage ritual.
The couple smoothly completed six rounds, and then unexpectedly the groom refused to finish the last round after receiving a phone call, much to the shock of the onlookers. The bride's family, taken aback by this attitude outright, created a tumult, and in the process, took the groom, his father, and some of his relatives hostage.
The incident took place in Nadoti tehsil, and policemen were called to keep things in check.
Veer Singh, the officer-in-charge at Nadoti Police Station, said that statements were taken from both parties, yet neither wished to pursue legal action. The police, thus, are assuming a supervisory role while, in view of the rural context of the situation, mediation is being handled by the local panchayat and an elder community leader, Panch Patel.
The bride's side had allegedly spent almost Rs 56 lakh for the wedding. The Panchayat is now contemplating if the groom's side has to return that amount.
According to the villagers, the marriage was stopped after the groom allegedly received a call from a girl, following which he made an abrupt decision to back out after the sixth round. The matter is being tried at the panchayat level while the police are keeping vigil to maintain peace.
