A critical statement made by the CPM Kerala secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan against spiritual leader Matha Amrithanandamayi has invited criticism from the Congress and the BJP.

Referring to Amrithanandamayi's participation at the Ayyappa Bhaktha Sangamam organised in Thruvananthapuram to protest against entry of women at Sabarimala Ayyappa temeple, Balakrishnan asked if Amrithanandamayi lost her celibacy even as large number of male and female devotees of different ages visited her.

Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh demanded that a case should be registered against Balakrishnan as the criticism amounted to insulting womanhood.
