The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday came down heavily on former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju for calling Mahatma Gandhi a “British agent”and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose a “Japanese agent” in a blog post.

The House unanimously passed a resolution condemning his comments, with Leader of the House and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley asking members to reflect on how people with mindsets like Katju get appointed to the Supreme Court.

“This House expresses its unequivocal condemnation of the recent remarks of the former judge of the Supreme Court, Shri Justice Markandey Katju, against the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who led the Indian National Army for the freedom of the country,” said the resolution read out by Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari.

As the House assembled in the morning, Naresh Agarwal of the Samajwadi Party raised the issue and found support from all sides. Demands were also raised for taking legal action against Katju and withdrawing the government accommodation.
