The gross mishandling of the recent molestation of a teenage girl in full public view in Guwahati has made women’s organisations and social activists question the role of the National Commission for Women (NCW) and demand its revamp. They also sought autonomy for the Commission to free it from political interference.

Kavita Krishnan, chief of All India Progressive Women’s Association, demanded the resignation of NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma for her questionable views on women. She alleged that Sharma asked girls to correct their dress sense. “How can people with such a mindset hold an important office as women’s commission chief,” she asked.

Krishnan demanded revamp of the Commission and induction of persons actively associated with gender issues. Criticising the appointments to the Commission, she alleged that the previous chairperson too was not suitable for the role.

National Federation of Indian Women General Secretary Annie Raja demanded complete autonomy to NCW to improve its functioning.
