Former Punjab minister Bibi Jagir Kaur’s hopes of contesting the Assembly election were dashed on Tuesday as the Supreme Court dismissed a plea to stay her conviction in the 2002 murder case of her daughter.
A bench comprising Justices Adarsh K Goel and Uday U Lalit declined to entertain the plea and rejected her contention, advanced by senior advocate Shyam Divan, that a stay on the conviction was imperative to allow the senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader to contest the February 4 polls under the Representation of the People Act.
Divan contended that Bibi was not convicted for murder in the case, but was sentenced to five years under less grievous charges of criminal conspiracy, abduction and wrongful confinement.
He also pointed out that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had already put on hold her sentence.
The bench, however, said that it could not stay her conviction and upheld the high court order.
