It will be drastic shift from reel-life to real-life for Bollywood action hero Salman Khan, an accused in a 13-year-old hit-and-run case.

The actor will step into the box to give his version of sequence of events and the evidence presented by the prosecuting team to the Mumbai sessions court.

On Friday, Salman (49), will personally appear before Additional Sessions judge D W Deshpande for recording his statement under Section 313 of the CrPC.

Among those who would be present during the recording of statement are special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat and the legal team of the accused led by defence lawyer Shrikant Shivade.

Submission of evidence

The prosecution has closed submission of evidence against the actor and this is the crucial stage of the trial before final arguments.

The re-trial is being conducted on a day-to-day basis. On September 28, 2002, at Bandra’s Hill Road, Salman, who was under the influence of alcohol, dashed his
Toyota Land Cruiser into the American Express bakery and immediately fled the spot.

One pavement dweller was killed and four others were injured.

A case was filed by the Bandra police and the actor was later arrested.
Initially, the case was tried before the metropolitan magistrate court in Bandra.

However, later the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was added and it was shifted to the Mumbai sessions court.

10 years term

The actor faces a maximum jail term of 10 years, if convicted, under the graver charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The prosecution has claimed that Salman was under the influence of alcohol and was driving rashly.

Besides, he did not have a driving licence and was even warned by a police bodyguard, the late Ravindra Patil, attached to him.

Salman’s lawyers have denied that he was behind the wheel.
