Sarabhai, Ramakant Panda get Padma awards

Eminent neurosurgeon Satya Paul Agarwal and cardiac surgeon Ramakant Panda, who performed the beating heart surgery on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year, historian Bipan Chandra and dancer Mallika Sarabhai are also in the list.

In the trade and industry category Venu Srinivasan of the TVS Group, Alluri Venkata Satyanarayana Raju, B Raveendran Pillai, Deepak Puri, Irshad Mirza and Kapil Mohan have been selected for Padma Shri awards.

Former CBI Director D R Karthikeyan, who headed the Special Investigation Team that probed the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and environment activist Ranjit Bhargava have also been chosen for Padma Shri awards.

Former Union Minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil gets Padma Bhushan for social work while Ghulam Mohammad Mir and Arun Sarma get Padma Shri in public service and literature and education category. 

In all, six people have been chosen for Padma Vibhushan, 43 for Padma Bhushan and  81 for Padma Shri. The list includes 13 foreign citizens or nationals, including seven from the US, two from the UK and one each form the UAE, Bahrain, Germany and Spain.

Kirti Chakra for Rukhsana
Rukshana Kausar and her brother Aijaz Ahmad have been awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second highest gallantry award in peacetime, for their act of bravery in killing a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander in their Morha Kalsi village in Jammu and Kashmir last year, report agencies from Jammu. The announcement was made in New Delhi on Monday on the eve of Republic Day.
