Defence Research and Development Organisation chief Vijay Kumar Saraswat will retire on Friday after spending four decades in the agency. He worked on developing a range of missiles.

Giving him a warm send-off, Defence Minister A K Antony said Saraswat’s contribution to research in the agency would be next only to APJ Abdul Kalam, who went on to become the President of India. Saraswat was one of Kalam’s close associate developing surface-to-surface missile Prithvi and the air defence system.

Saraswat was the director of Imarat, a DRDO laboratory, before becoming chief controller (missile system sciences) at the headquarters in 2005.
