The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to entertain a plea for registration of an FIR against former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Mulayam Singh Yadav for making a reported claim that he had himself ordered to the police for opening of fire on 'Kar Sevaks' (volunteers for Ram temple) in Ayodhya in 1990.
A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and D Y Chandrachud pointed out that the special leave petition has been filed by petitioner, Rana Sangram Singh, after delay of over 250 days which itself was a sufficient ground to reject the plea.
The Allahabad High Court had on May 3, 2016 dismissed the petition filed by Singh.
In a special leave petition, Singh, through his counsel Vishnu Shankar Jain, contended that Mulayam had in a public meeting in Mainpuri district on February 6, 2014 claimed that it was on his specific order that the police had opened fire on 'Kar Sevaks' in Ayodhya, which resulted into death of several of them.
He had sought a direction to the Lucknow police for registration of a criminal case for the offence of murder and criminal conspiracy.
The petitioner had also filed an application under Section 156(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code before a local court in Lucknow for registering an FIR which was also declined.
