Senior Congress leader and former union minister Gurudas Kamat passed away on Wednesday. Kamat was 63.

He is survived by wife Maharookh and son Sunil, who is a doctor. He passed away in a hospital in Delhi following a heart attack.

A lawyer by profession, he was an organisation man and close to the Nehru-Gandhi family. When Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister, he was appointed the President of Indian Youth Congress.

During Manmohan Singh government, Kamat had served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs and Communication and Information Technology.

As an AICC general secretary, he had been in-charge of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

He was also a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the Congress.

In 2003, he was part of a delegation led by late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the United Nations in New York City.

Kamat is a former MP from Mumbai. He had also served as President of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee.
