BJP workers "cleansed" the statue of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri minutes after Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra garlanded it in Varanasi on Wednesday.
According to sources, around a dozen saffron party workers "washed" the statue with 'Gangajal' (Ganga water) soon after Priyanka left after garlanding Shastri's statue.
"Priyanka's husband is facing corruption charges... We can not allow the wife of such a person to touch Shastri's statue," a BJP worker said.
Congress leaders slammed the saffron party and said that Shastri was a Congress leader.
"It's the habit of the BJP to claim the legacy of others," a senior Congress leader said.
