West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday slammed the State Government over post-poll violence asking how can the Chief Minister remain silent in such an "alarming" situation.

Speaking to reporters at the Bagdogra Airport in Darjeeling the Governor said, “We have not seen such violence since Independence. This is an alarming situation. Ever since the Assembly elections were declared, unabated violence has been going on in several parts of West Bengal. The fundamental rights of people are in jeopardy and democracy is under attack.”

He further alleged that even after seven weeks since the Assembly election results were declared, the State Government did not take any step to curb post-poll violence.

“People belonging to the SC, ST communities and others are under attack. But the police are not taking any action. The State administration is also not helping them. Why is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee silent? The ostrich-like stance of the state administration is not acceptable,” said Dhankhar.

Reacting to his comments TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy said that "the governor falls ill without showing his face on TV and hence, is making such baseless allegations.
