Six workers, including three employees of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), were injured when hot water spilled on them during routine maintenance work at the first unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) on Wednesday.
KNPP site director N Sundar told Deccan Herald, “Three of our workers and three contract labourers were injured when hot water in a processing system spilled on them.”
He said that after providing them with first-aid, they were admitted to NPCIL hospital. “It is not a major accident. They suffered first-degree burns. However, we don’t want to take any chances,” Sundar said.
Refuting that the incident was caused due to a steam pipe break or blast at KNPP, NPCIL, in its official release, said that while carrying out maintenance work on a valve in the turbine building of unit one at 12:10 hours, there was an incident of hot water spillage from the valve.
