The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday said it may be “forced” to have a post-poll alliance with the Congress but indicated it would not be without conditions, as the party wanted the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh to be dismissed.
“The youth, farmers and traders, all are disheartened with the UP government. We will support whoever dismisses the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh,” SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters after casting his vote at a polling both in his constituency of Mainpuri.
The former UP chief minister said: “The trend after three phases of polling shows no government at the Centre would be possible without the SP’s support.”
He said the party’s parliamentary board and MPs would meet after the elections to take a call on the issue of extending support.
“Everything would depend on the post-poll equations and the numbers, and taking all these things into account, we will decide,” Yadav said.
Asked if the SP would remain allied with the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, which it supported during the trust vote last year, Mulayam Singh said: “We saved the government for electricity, nuclear deal and the security of the country.”
“The BSP government in UP is unconstitutional as it has not implemented the Allahabad high court order on reinstating the 18 thousand dismissed police and PAC constables”,
Yadav said.
Meanwhile, SP general secretary Amar Singh said in Ghaziabad: “Since we cannot go with the Third Front (as Mayawati is already there), for the sake of secularism, we may be forced to look at the Congress.”
