A day after the judicial custody of S Sreesanth was extended till June 18, the cricketer’s parents sought public support in helping them handle the crisis.

Speaking to reporters in Kochi on Wednesday, Shanthakumaran Nair and Savitridevi maintained that their son was innocent, but refused to take questions on the ongoing probe into the spot-fixing case.

Savitridevi said she believed that her son would be home on Friday (after the cricketer’s new bail plea is heard). She said she knew Jiju Janardhanan as Sreesanth’s friend but couldn’t comment on his involvement in the alleged spot-fixing scandal. Referring to Sreesanth’s on-field behaviour, which has come under criticism in the past, she said that in spite of those “mischiefs” her son enjoyed support from the fans, and requested them to back the cricketer as he faces charges under a more stringent law.

Meanwhile, allegations of unfair treatment towards Sreesanth have also gathered steam in Kerala’s public space. The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) had sent its officials on a “fact-finding” visit after doubts were raised on the police handling of the case.
Political leaders and legal experts, apart from former state cricketers, have raised concern over the probe being allegedly “narrowed down” to Sreesanth.
