The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the Modi government to constitute a committee to suggest a legal framework for the regulation and protection of domestic workers.
The apex court has asked the committee to give its report within six months, as per ANI.
It has asked the Centre to make an effort to enact a law soon after the committee sends in its recommendations.
The SC said domestic workers are an essential workforce and there was no pan-India legislation to protect their rights. It also said that domestic workers are vulnerable to exploitation, abuse and trafficking by employers and agencies.
