The Congress on Thursday picked up former Haryana minister Randeep Surjewala to handle the way the party communicates through the media at a time when it gears up to take on the Modi government.

The 47-year-old leader is the youngest person to be made Chairman of the AICC communications department which has been helmed by stalwarts such as Pranab Mukherjee, Shivraj Patil, Ambika Soni, Ghulam Nabi Azad, M Veerappa Moily and Janardan Dwivedi. Surjewala’s appointment also comes at a time when the Congress is giving opportunity to younger leaders as vice-president Rahul Gandhi gradually wrests greater control of the organisation.

Surjewala made it clear that his appointment was for the time being, till the Congress finalises the organisational reshuffle ahead of the AICC session planned for some time next month.
