Chennai: 19-year-old S Chandru, grandson of DMK councillor K Dhanasekaran, has surrendered to the Chennai City police for his role in intentionally running over a two-wheeler with his car, leading to the tragic death of a college student.

Dhanasekaran is a senior functionary of the DMK in Chennai and chairman of the Accounts Committee, Greater Chennai Corporation. Chandru and three others, who were traveling in a luxury car, fled the scene on Monday night after their vehicle hit a two-wheeler, initially considered a road accident.

While the three others were apprehended by police on Tuesday morning based on information from those on the two-wheeler, Chandru had fled.

A rivalry over a romantic relationship appears to be the motive behind the incident. According to police, Nithin Sai, who was studying at a private college in Mylapore, went to School Road in Anna Nagar on Monday night with friends to celebrate a birthday.

After dinner, they dispersed on their two-wheelers, with Abhishek riding the bike and Nithin Sai on the pillion. The speeding car, coming from the opposite direction, struck their two-wheeler, causing both to fall on the road, with Nithin Sai losing his life instantly.

When their other two friends realized Sai and Abhishek were missing, they returned to find Sai dead and Abhishek grievously injured. Nithin Sai’s friends told police that their group had a rivalry with another student gang and suspected they were deliberately targeted.
