Ordered to play alimony to his estranged wife, a man from Coimbatore shocked everyone in court when he brought the Rs 80,000 sum in coins.
According to a report by The Times of India, the incident took place at an additional family court in the city.
The man, a 37-year-old call taxi owner and driver, was asked by the court to pay his wife a sum of Rs 2 lakh as interim maintenance.
The man acceded, but carried bundles of Rs 2 and Re 1 coins to the family court, and submitted Rs 80,000 of the amount in coins.
Upon seeing the man's rather unorthodox and audacious move, the judge reportedly instructed him to pay the amount in notes instead.
Videos circulated online showed the man carrying two white bags filled with coins, and walking out of the court building and placing them in a car, presumably after the judge's order.
The next day, the man reportedly replaced the coins with paper currency and submitted the amount to the court.
He has been instructed to pay the remaining Rs 1.2 lakh soon.
