Sources in the district administration said the accident took place at the unit in Chinnakamanpatti village near Sivakasi at around 9 am when workers were mixing chemicals for producing crackers during the day.

“Prima facie, it appears that the incident took place due to friction while handling chemicals. Further investigation is on,” a senior official said, adding that the fireworks’ manufacturing unit was involved in producing fancy fireworks.

While six have died, of the five injured, three are said to be critical and are being treated at the government hospital in Sivakasi. The official said eight working sheds were completely damaged due to the impact of the blast.

Freak accidents inside fireworks manufacturing units in Sivakasi have become a recurring event though the Virudhunagar district says it is taking efforts to reduce the number of incidents through strict enforcement of law.

The fireworks factories in Sivakasi witnessed 236 accidents from 2014 till April 24 this year, resulting in the death of 291 people, with 204 others being injured.
