Hyderabad: The Telangana health department on Saturday said there is no cause for alarm regarding the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) reports emerging from China, and the state health department has been monitoring the situation closely in coordination with the Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), MoH&FW, New Delhi.

The Telangana Health Department also analysed the data, and there is no spike in prevailing respiratory infections in the state compared to the same period last year.

“There is news about a human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China in various electronic and print media platforms. The DGHS and Director NCDC, MoH&FW, GOl issued a statement on HMPV:It is like any other respiratory virus that causes a common cold and flu-like symptoms during the winter season, especially among younger and older age groups,” said Telangana's Public Health & Family Welfare director, Dr. B. Ravinder Naik.

He also said that so far, no case of HMPV has been reported in Telangana. “The health department has analysed the data of prevailing respiratory infections within the state. There is no substantial increase in December 2024 compared to 2023. As a part of precautionary measures, the Health Department urges citizens to follow certain do's and don'ts as a safeguard against respiratory infections. There is no cause for alarm regarding human metapneumovirus (HMPV) reports from China, and the state health department is monitoring the situation closely in coordination with Director NCDC, MoH&FW, GOl New Delhi,” added Dr Naik.
