Hyderabad: The District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) of Rangareddy district with help from Rachakonda police on Tuesday sealed a private hospital in connection with an illegal kidney transplantation.

Sumanth Chari, the MD of the hospital has been taken into custody.

Police, along with health authorities, raided the hospital where they found two kidney donors and two recipients. Police shifted the four persons to a government-run hospital. The doctors belonging to other states who were performing these surgeries are absconding.

The recipients belong to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Police found that the Alakananda multi-specialty hospital representatives have been luring poor and gullible people to donate kidneys. The hospital opened just six months ago and it had approvals only to conduct minor surgeries and no permissions to conduct kidney transplants. The recipients were allegedly charged Rs 50 lakh for the procedure and the donors were paid a paltry sum.

Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha has taken note of the incident and appointed a four-member committee led by Osmania General Hospital's former superintendent Dr Nagender to probe the matter.

The committee members on Wednesday inspected the hospital.

DMHO, K Venkateswar Rao said the report of the committee will be submitted to the government for action.

Police are also probing the hospital's links with illegally run organ trade networks in other states.
