Hyderabad: A jolly trip of a group of seven friends turned tragic, as five of them drowned in Kondapochamma Sagar reservoir, on Saturday in Markook mandal of Siddipet.
A group of seven youngsters from Musheerabad in Hyderabad went to the reservoir for recreation. As they attempted to take a group selfie, five of them slipped and fell in to dam water.
The irrigation department, police, and other government departments are actively working to retrieve the bodies. The group of seven young men, aged between 17 and 20, ventured into the reservoir, holding hands for balance. However, five members drowned while two managed to escape.
The deceased identified as Dhanush, 20, a photo studio worker and resident of Musheerabad, Lohit, a 17-year-old student and Dhanush's younger brother; Sahil, a 19-year-old resident of Musheerabad; Jatin, a 17-year-old student from Chintalbasti, Khairatabad; and Cheekatla Dhaneshwar, a 17-year-old student from Bansilalpet near Kavadiguda.
Md Ibrahim, 20, an e-commerce delivery agent from Musheerabad, and Komari Mrigank, 17, a diploma student from Musheerabad, Ramnagar, survived the tragedy.
After arriving at the dam on Saturday morning, the seven youths spent some time playing in the waters before attempting to take a group selfie. They ventured further into the waters, holding each other's hands for balance, in an attempt to capture a group selfie. Sadly, five members of the group lost their balance, slipped into the water, and drowned. The passersby rescued the other two who managed to cling to nearby rocks.
BRS Working President K T Rama Rao expressed grief over the accidental death of five people in Kondapochamma Sagar. He conveyed his deep condolences to the families of the young men. KTR stated that the untimely death of young people in their prime is an irreparable loss to their families. He urged the government to stand by the grieving families in all possible ways.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the incident and ordered search operations with scuba divers for those who went missing and also instructed district officials to stay close and monitor the situation to take necessary relief measures.
