The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, urging it not to allow Vedanta Ltd's plea for re-opening the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) without granting it a hearing.
The move by the state government comes amid fears that Vedanta Ltd may approach the top court against its decision to close down the plant.
A one-line caveat was filed by the state government, saying no orders should be passed by the top court without first hearing the Tamil Nadu government.
The company had on Monday termed the state government's order closing the Sterlite Copper's smelter unit in Thoothukudi permanently an "unfortunate development".
"Closure of Sterlite Copper plant is an unfortunate development, especially since, we have operated the plant for over 22 years in most transparent and sustainable way, contributing to the Tuticorin and state's socio-economic development," Vedanta Limited said in a statement.
"We will study the order and decide on the future course of action," the company said.
At least 13 people were killed and hundreds injured on May 22 and 23 in police firing at Tuticorin as protesters demanded the closure of the Vedanta Group-run Sterlite Industries for reportedly polluting the area, causing severe health problems for the local residents and depletion of the water table.
