A few days after the NEET results were released, private medical colleges and deemed universities in Tamil Nadu have almost doubled their fees for the MBBS programme.

Private colleges who were forced to select students on merit say the fee hike affecting thousands of students has been made on the basis of infrastructure and faculty expenses. Students opting for private colleges in the state may have to pay between Rs 1.7 to Rs 1.9 crore that would include capitation fees. Until last year, the fees were about Rs 1 crore, out of which Rs 35 lakh were charged on tuition and Rs 50 lakh as capitation fees.  Directorate of Medical Education sources said a student would get admission in private medical college based on his/her NEET ranking.
