With catchment areas in Karnataka receiving heavy rainfall, Tamil Nadu will open the gates of Mettur Dam on June 19 for 'kuruvai' (short-term) paddy cultivation in the Cauvery delta region.

Usually, water from the dam is released on June 12, but it was not the case for the past seven years due to various reasons.

In a statement on Monday, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said sluice gates of Stanley Reservoir will be opened on July 19 to facilitate kuruvai crops in the delta region.

While expressing inability to release water from the Mettur dam as scheduled in June, Palaniswami had announced a Rs 115 crore package to help farmers take up cultivation using available water resources.
