Trinamool Congress leader and Krishnaganj Assembly constituency MLA Satyajit Biswas was shot dead on Saturday night at Majdia-Phulbari in Nadia district.

According to the district TMC leadership, Biswas was shot several times from point-blank range by miscreants when he was attending a cultural programme in his constituency. They alleged that BJP leader Mukul Roy, who was earlier the TMC general secretary, was behind the murder. However, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh denied the allegation.

“Satyajit defeated the BJP in 2016 Assembly elections and foiled Roy’s conspiracy against the TMC. Whoever has murdered him has done so with the blessings of Roy. This is a political murder. The BJP and Roy are behind this murder,” said Gourishankar Dutta, TMC district president in Nadia.

He further alleged that for a long time the BJP was conspiring against Biswas. “Just see what we do to Roy if he dares to enter Nadia next time,” said Dutta.

Denying the allegations, the BJP state president said that the “murder was an outcome of TMC’s faction feud. We want the truth to come out and will fully cooperate even if there is a CBI investigation.”

“We are investigating the case. The accused will be brought to justice,” a district police official said. However, he refused to divulge any further information.
