Three women CRPF personnel were killed and 18 of their colleagues injured when a speeding truck rammed into the bus carrying them at a traffic junction in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka on Wednesday morning. The driver of the truck bearing a Rajasthan registration number managed to escape from the spot.
The 32-seater bus was carrying 27 women personnel of 88th Mahila Battalion and a driver at the time of the accident.
They were headed to a camp in Dwarka Base for a parade exercise from a training camp in Jharoda Kalan.
Just as the bus reached the intersection between Sector 14 and Sector 16 of Dwarka, the driver constable Shree Bhagwan Yadav slowed down on noticing the out-of-order traffic signal. All of a sudden, a truck rammed into the middle of the bus and left the vehicle overturned towards its right and pushed to another lane on the road.
The three personnel who died were sitting in the bus at the spot of maximum impact. While ASI Ram Kala, 45, died on the spot, head constables Seema, 38, and 40-year-old Saroj died on their way to the hospital. Before other commuters could recover from the tragic event, the driver had managed to escape from the spot.
Eyewitness
Some other CRPF women personnel, who were following the ill-fated bus closely in another vehicle, witnessed the accident and reported it to the police. Along with locals, they helped the rescue operation.
Eighteen other occupants were rushed to hospitals where the condition of three was said to be serious.
However, by late evening, they were said to be out of danger. Eleven of them are admitted to the trauma centre of AIIMS, six at Bensups Hospital in Dwarka and the rest at CRPF Hospital in Jharoda.
Post-mortem of the three dead women was conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and their bodies handed over to their families.
