Following the serial blasts that rocked the venue of a BJP rally in Patna on Sunday addressed by its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, neighbouring Uttar Pradesh was put on high alert.

Official sources said security has been beefed up at all important buildings and public places and intelligence agencies had been alerted.

Security was increased in communally sensitive places like Ayodhya, Matura and Varanasi in the state that witnessed large scale violence in Muzaffarnagar last month in which 62 people were killed and over 100 injured.

Intelligence agencies have warned that anti-social element may try fomenting trouble in the state during the festival of Deepavali.

In the wake of the Patna blasts, district officials reviewed the situation in Baharaich, 200 kilometres from capital Lucknow, where Modi is scheduled to address a
rally on November 8. Sources said security has been further tightened there.
