Angry farmers went on the rampage and torched several police vehicles and the developer company near Jattari in Aligarh district, about 400 kilometres from here.

Over a dozen people, mostly farmers, were injured in the clashes during which police opened fire to disperse the frenzied mob, police sources here said on Sunday.

The trouble sparked off on Saturday evening when the leader of the farmers Ram Babu Katelia, who had been sitting on a dharna, was arrested by the police.

The enraged farmers blocked the Aligarh-Mathura highway, indulged in heavy stone pelting, torched several vehicles and ransacked a police outpost prompting the police to open fire.

While the officials claimed that one person was killed in the clashes, eyewitness accounts claimed that three people, including two farmers and a policeman were killed. Security personnel in strength had been deployed at several villages along the highway in Aligarh district, sources said.

The Rashtriya Lok Dal and Samajwadi Party would be holding a statewide demonstration on Monday to protest the police action.
